Older adults and chronic pain

The figures for prevalence, incidence, associated costs and, above all, the suffering caused by chronic pain in adults and the elderly are alarming. Chronic pain is the most important cause of disability worldwide, together with mental disorders. Despite the continuous efforts from multiple specialties of knowledge such as physiotherapy, medicine, psychology, anthropology, sociology, philosophy or genetics, today the figures continue to grow. This situation causes great suffering to those who suffer from any of the multiple forms of onset (low back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, among others), as well as being associated with different comorbidities such as depression, sedentary lifestyles and poor cardiovascular health. It also affects the social environment of the sufferer insofar as it affects his or her personal, emotional and work relationships. In addition, it generates health care costs that are difficult to sustain, both in terms of care and the sick leave it generates.

The most prestigious clinical practice guidelines worldwide place the following three factors as the first line of action: (i) active coping through moderate physical exercise, (ii) pain education to understand how pain works, and (iii) promotion of parallel healthy habits that help to improve the overall health of the sufferer (diet, sleep hygiene and mental health, among others).

The Chair is integrated in the II Healthy Malaga Plan. It carries out actions in different neighborhoods of the city using the principle of "Patient and Public Involment" (PPI), through which the population is involved before carrying out the educational actions, to know what they expect, what interests them and how they wish to develop the action together with the Chair team. Educational supports such as discussion groups and real visits, elaboration of infographic material and development of audiovisual educational micro-pillars on websites and social networks are used.
